I'm actually going to be in south africa for the next couple of weeks on biz and holiday, so it will be kinda hard to update new information for a short period of time.
This being a bad time, when things are going so smoothly. Anyhow, I'll be back in a couple of weeks with updates, and will probably throw in some more research results every couple of days in the meantime

Jonathan, I just came across this at the BOM site,
Separate timeseries are available for maximum, mean and minimum temperature, as well as diurnal temperature range (DTR). Mean temperatures are the simple average of the maximum and minimum temperatures, while DTR represents the difference between maximum and minimum temperatures.
They seem to be making an elementary error in calculating the mean temperature. Even I, a non-statistician know the difference between mean and median.
